With thousands of passengers arriving and departing, Derby is the busiest time of year at Louisville International Airport (SDF) and Bowman Field (LOU) as the community welcomes guests from around the world.
From Thursday, May 3 through Monday, May 7 our airline partners scheduled more than 81,100 arriving and departing seats. Sunday was the peak day for outbound passengers with more than 11,200 scheduled seats. This is a significant increase over the 6,500 seats scheduled on a typical day in May.
To welcome Derby guests at Louisville International Airport, 24 greeters distributed 13,000 Ruth Hunt Woodford Reserve® bourbon balls to arriving passengers. They were also met with live musical performances from 64 musicians and approximately 3,600 fresh roses throughout the terminal.
This year, Atlantic Aviation had a record year. They handled nearly 750 private aircraft on Thursday, May 3 through Sunday, May 6 with 344 on the ground at post time.
Bowman Field reported 800 aircraft operations from Thursday to Sunday. As in previous years, Bowman Field was the venue for the Kentucky Derby Festival’s U.S. Bank Great Balloon Race and the U.S. Bank Great Balloon Rush Hour Race.
