If you’re traveling to Louisville for this year’s Kentucky Derby, or hosting friends and family, here is some helpful information when making your way through the Louisville International Airport. To minimize disruptions to our Derby guests as the airport is undergoing a $9.5 million Terminal Enhancement Project, construction will be halted from Saturday, April 23 until Tuesday, May 10.
The first Saturday in May will be one of the most exciting times for the city – and Louisville International kicks-off the festivities as soon as you step off the plane. On Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6, arriving passengers will be welcomed by live music and greeters offering adult guests complimentary Woodford Reserve® Bourbon Balls in the terminal’s airside rotunda.
And as passengers claim their baggage, they will be treated to a bugler’s “Call to the Post,” which heralds the arrival of horses on the racetrack for their race.
Liquor is Liquid
Many guests purchase souvenir bourbon bottles as a memento of their exciting weekend. However, please remember that “liquor is liquid” and should be stored properly in your checked baggage. Remember, the 3-1-1 rule for carrying liquids, gels or aerosols (i.e. lotions, creams, pastes, etc.) through the security checkpoint. The 3.4 ounces (at most) of liquid, gels or aerosols must be in a 1, 1 quart-size, clear plastic zip-top bag to be carried through the checkpoint. To confirm any item’s carry-on status, use the “When I Fly, Can I Bring My…” search tool at www.tsa.gov. Remember, if liquid is in a container larger than 3.4 ounces–it must be placed in your checked baggage.
To help ensure souvenirs— including bourbon bottles, Kentucky Oaks or Derby glasses and other special items make it home safely, the Louisville International Airport will offer complimentary bubble-wrap services on Sunday, May 8. Beginning at 4 a.m., volunteer Airport Ambassadors will host two bubble-wrap stations near the airlines’ ticket counters on each side of the terminal and wrap any fragile items so that passengers can place it in their checked baggage.
With an increase in Derby travelers expected on Sunday, May 8, be sure to arrive at least 1½ hours prior to your scheduled departure— particularly during peak departure times. At Louisville International Airport on the Sunday after Derby, those peak periods are from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. For travelers’ convenience, the TSA security checkpoint at Louisville International is open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. For additional TSA information, visit www.tsa.gov.
