Officials with the Louisville Regional Airport Authority recently celebrated the completion of the Woodlawn Overpass Project, which was the third – and final – phase of the $28 million Crittenden Drive Relocation Project. “This milestone is 11 years in the making,” said Skip Miller, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. “We are very excited this day has arrived and are grateful for the support of state and local leaders who helped us achieve this goal.”
The Airport Authority’s Beyond 2010 Plan, which included the Crittenden Drive Relocation Project, was adopted in 2006 to ensure Louisville International Airport (SDF) would be prepared to handle the newest and largest long-range aircraft. This plan included relocating sections of Crittenden Drive to accommodate the completion of the nearly two-mile long, 100-foot wide Taxiway Alpha that runs parallel to the airport’s West Runway, and which opened for use in late 2014.
“Louisville International Airport is a vital hub of global logistics,” said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. “This project, including the Woodlawn Overpass, demonstrates the community’s commitment to strong, public infrastructure that will help attract new businesses and jobs to the region.” The third phase of the Crittenden Drive Relocation Project included reconstruction of the existing Woodlawn Overpass that spans 164-feet across Strawberry Lane and the CSX railroad in a carefully phased manner to minimize traffic impacts to the area. Also curb-line drainage improvements were installed, pavement repairs were made and 920-feet of Allmond Avenue was reconstructed.
The Crittenden Drive Relocation Project’s previous two phases were the South Connector, which opened in August 2012, followed by the North Connector in September 2013. The completion of the Woodlawn Overpass Project and minor on-airfield improvements, concludes the Beyond 2010 Plan.
