SDF NEXT UPDATE: New Covered Walkways, Pet Relief Area Now Open

November 12, 2020

Just in time for winter weather, covered walkways are coming to the parking facilities at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (photos below). The new walkways connecting baggage claim to Level 2 of the parking garage and the surface parking lot open today. And for our four-legged guests, a more spacious pet relief area with comfy artificial grass and a pet watering station for our thirsty furry friends is open too, outside baggage claim near the covered walkways. The improvements are part of SDF Next, the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport’s $400 million airport improvement program.

Intentionally designed to make the customer experience easier and more intuitive, pedestrian access from the surface parking lot to the terminal takes place on one level. Additionally, the commercial curb has reopened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Taxis, limos and the public TARC bus service resume from the commercial curb on the lower roadway, and passenger pick-ups for Uber, Lyft and hotel shuttles now operate from the new Commercial Ground Transportation Lot on the terminal’s west side, immediately outside baggage claim.

Inside the terminal, the East and West Tunnels from Level 1 of the garage (rental car pick-up/drop-off area) to the terminal have been closed for renovation. Due to this closure, rental car customers will be redirected to the garage elevators or stairs to access Level 2 and then access the terminal by way of the covered walkways. Both the East and West Tunnels are expected to reopen in April 2021 and August 2021, respectively.

The Louisville Regional Airport Authority owns and operates the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and Bowman Field. SDF Next is a visionary plan to elevate the customer experience at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Aviation is an economic powerhouse for the region, generating $10.4 billion in economic impact every year. Six commercial airlines offer nonstop service to 30 nonstop destinations from SDF. The airport is also home to UPS Worldport, moving millions of tons of product annually, making SDF the 2nd largest cargo airport in America.
